A Sampling of Northern European Ports of Call
Bergen

A city with its feet in the sea, its head in the skies and its heart in the right place... full of infectious enthusiasm, and happy to share it with visitors. Welcome to Bergen, the old city with a young outlook. Bergen grew up around its colourful harbour – it was the hub of commerce, seafaring and craftsmanship. It became the north’s largest city, Norway’s first capital city and the seat of royalty. Bergensers have an in-born love for their city and even newcomers quickly fall under its spell. Bergen is a charming city full of small wooden houses. They scramble up the mountainsides and compete for space with wealthy mansions, flaunting themselves all the way into the city. Clusters of old houses cling together in among the new quarters. Bergensers take a keen interest in protecting their grass-root traditions and building styles, and Bergen architecture is distinctive yet diverse. Though Bergen has suffered many fires over the centuries, it still has one of Europe’s largest conglomerates of wooden houses.

Bremerhaven

Bremerhaven has all the magic of a maritime experience, the breathtaking diversity of a great international seaport that lives on the water and earns its money there, as an international trading centre, a hub for the worldwide flow of commodities and as an unbeatable destination for all those who dream of a holiday beside and on the sea. All these facets are united in a town that is characterised by the wide open skies of the North, the eternal rhythm of the tides and by the watercourses that form its vital maritime lines of communication. But Bremerhaven is more: it is also part of the state of the "Free Hanseatic City of Bremen", Germany's only two-city state consisting of the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. Two cities, one state, which, however, are not united geographically. A distance of 60 kilometres lies between the two cities. The city's attractiveness as a leisure resort is something it already makes the most of. This is a shopping paradise right next to the sea, where you can stroll around department stores and boutiques, through seaport pubs and chic bistros and virtually never lose sight of ships, the dikes and the seaport atmosphere. The intensity of experience offered in Bremerhaven makes it an almost unique resort linking the land and the sea.

Cuxhaven

The Nordsee – a feeling of wide panoramas, the open sea, unending sand. The smell of salt in the air, a fresh breeze, the surf breaking. With seven islands and a coastline between the Ems, Weser and Elbe, the Nordsee offers you unlimited opportunities for holiday fun. Let yourself be inspired by one of the most unspoilt regions in Germany. The holiday paradise of the East Frisian Islands lie like a string of pearls just off the coast. Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge defy the constant tides and the stiff North Sea breeze. They are driven steadily eastwards by the wind and the waves. Between the islands and the coast stretches a unique habitat – the Wadden Sea national park is home to more than just lugworms and seals. The wadden is one of the most valuable and bio-diverse habitats in the world, best explored bare-foot on a walk across the tidal flats. On the mainland lie the impressive sea defences, almost 1000 kilometres in length – without the dikes, large parts of Niedersachsen simply wouldn’t exist, as the state’s lowest point is around 2.3 m below sea level. The battle for land against the power of the sea is fought with great steadfastness. Behind the dikes, you will find wide natural landscapes and East Frisian friendliness – perfect for a friendly cup of tea after a bicycle or canoe tour.

Dundee

A visit to the ancient lands of Angus and the city of Dundee combines a landscape of unspoiled Highland glens, beautiful rugged coastline and a vibrant cosmopolitan city. A visit to the University City of Dundee is a must for culture seekers. Dundee proudly remembers its industrial and maritime heritage with award winning attractions such as the RRS Discovery, berthed at Discovery Point, which was the ship that made the first expedition to the Antarctic by Captain Scott, and Verdant Works – a heritage centre recalling the city’s industrial past. The city has a lively arts scene and a blossoming cultural quarter where you will find contemporary art and literature along with good theatre and cinema.

Greenock

The largest and main settlement in the area is Greenock. Traditionally dependent on heavy industry and manufacturing relating to the shipping trade, Greenock is now one of the largest centres for high technology and modern communications media in Europe. IBM, National Semiconductor, Amazon and T-Mobile One all have their UK or European bases in Greenock. Continued redevelopment of obsolete industrial land has resulted in a comfortable blend of Leisure and Retail services occupying the waterfront area. Greenock has excellent transport links, Clyde Port Authority operate one of the largest container terminals in Scotland which doubles as a busy Cruise ship terminal. The road links provide easy access to Glasgow International Airport (20 mins), Prestwick International Airport (45 mins), the main Caledonian McBrayne Ferry terminal in Gourock and regular freight and passenger Rail transport to Paisley (30 mins) and Glasgow (40mins).
